Aerial targets are widely used for military air defense training exercises. The most effective way to simulate hostile aircrafts is through the usage of aerial targets with a rocket propulsion system. This work was inspired by a need to train operators in using short and middle range air defense missile systems as Stinger, Grom, NASAMS and others. Taking that into account, the rocket size was designed to be 5.4 m in length and 0.40 m in diameter, a maximum flight distance of 20 000 m and a velocity range of up to 250 m/s was considered.For the creation of the training equipment the following research problems were solved: - the airflow modelling around the rocket body was carried out using ANSYS CFX software; velocity and pressure distribution, drag force and the drag coefficient on the Mach number were obtained;- to ensure the necessary flight characteristics, the internal ballistic problem was solved and a rocket motor with corresponding thrust parameters was designed;- applying MATLAB Simulink, the characteristics of the flight trajectory were obtained; - field-experimental testing was conducted; based on these results, the accuracy error of the model does not exceed 5 percent;On the basis of the research results, the rocket target was designed, manufactured and implemented in the Lithuanian Air Defense Forces (NATO/NSN code 6920-47-000-8331). The rocket-targets were successfully used in NATO air defense exercises “Amber Arrow” 2014, 2015, 2017 and “Baltic Zenith” 2018 and 2019.
